Last week we had a walk back in time to the history making Phillip Island World Superbike round of 2000 (Link), while this week we switch over to the Grand Prix paddock and the Jerez GP of April 30, 2000. 

Relive what was a race full of fire and intrigue as I wrote it 20 years ago today. Funnily enough if not for the current Coronavirus shit-fight, MotoGP would be racing at Jerez this weekend.

Max Biaggi clashed with Garry McCoy on the warm-up lap and went down, his Yamaha sat there quietly burning before the fire marshals put the small flames out. Biaggi got a lift back to pit lane to pick up his 2nd bike in the aim of starting from pit lane.

The mess made by the fire extinguishers caused the race start to be held up while the fire marshals tried to clear the spent fire retardant off the track. But Max didn’t think he should start from pit lane so jumped on his 2nd bike and rode straight back on to the grid. The Spanish crowd chanted ‘out, out’ continuously in Spanish at the Italian.

Max had the rules on his side – because he made the grid before they were under starting orders it was declared that he could take his original position on the grid after starting the 2nd warm-up lap from pit lane.

So around 15 minutes later they set off on another warm-up lap with Biaggi starting that lap from pit lane before Biaggi was then allowed to take up his pole position for the start.

After an incident free warm up lap this time around, the race got underway with Roberts in the lead, followed by Rossi, Barros and Checa.

Barros passed Rossi for 2nd – around a lap later Rossi took the 2nd position back. Roberts was looking good and had around half a second on the field by the end of lap 1.

As they commenced lap 2 the order was – Roberts, Rossi, Barros, Checa, Okada. Roberts had a decent lead and recorded a 1m44s lap on lap 2.

McCoy moved up to fifth on lap three

Okada attempted a pass on Checa during lap 3 but had his nose wiped as Carlos turned in across the front of him which nearly sent Okada off the track, the Japanese Honda rider managed to keep it upright and only lost a few places. McCoy was now up to 5th while Biaggi had been shuffled all the way back to 16th and looked to be having problems with his spare bike.

Criville took Okada for 6th and was starting to look dangerous as he closed on McCoy – especially on corner entry. McWilliams then came from nowhere on the twin-cylinder to slot it past Criville for that 6th position. The Ulsterman has been consistently faster than his more fancied Aprilia team-mate Harada thus far this season. Criville got him back but McWilliams immediately stuck it under him again. Biaggi returned to the pits and retired.

McCoy was getting bounced out of the seat when trying to get the power down. McWilliams started showing a wheel to Garry every now and then but then Criville got back past McWilliams.

Roberts led by over 3 seconds by lap 5 – from Rossi, Barros, Checa and McCoy. Kenny was on fire and broke Kevin Schwantz’s long standing lap record, he looked untouchable. Criville started to challenge McCoy for 5th.

Roberts way out in front with the Rossi, Barros and Checa group 4-seconds back. Then another gap back to McCoy, Criville, Okada and a now slightly fading McWilliams.

On lap 8 Criville pushed McCoy back to 6th but the duo were still 9-seconds behind race leader Roberts. Rossi still led the 2nd, 3rd and 4th pack but they were now 4.5 seconds down on Kenny. Checa took Barros for 3rd and started setting up Rossi for a pass.

By lap 10 Roberts had a 5.7 second lead over the 2nd pack with a further 5 seconds back to Criville and McCoy, that pair in 5th and 6th respectively.

Checa stuck it up the inside of Rossi on lap 11 and immediately pulled out a little gap over Rossi and Barros. Barros also snuck it under Rossi a few corners later. Meanwhile Roberts stretched his lead to 6.2 seconds.

McCoy attempted the most ridiculous and out of control pass on Criville that was hugely entertaining – but unfortunately he lost some time gathering it back in before putting his head down and chasing again.

Rossi got back under Barros for 3rd on lap 13 but Checa had by now cleared out from them a little. Criville and McCoy had made up quite some ground on Rossi and Barros and looked to perhaps have the speed to catch them before race end.

McWilliams then went down and out in the gravel, his frustration clear as he threw his helmet into the crowd but he walked away uninjured. 

Roberts shook his hand violently as he passed his pit to commence lap 16 of 26 which possibly indicated that there could be a problem with his RGV 500? This would be disastrous if he was to be foiled by machinery failure after clearly dominating this race. 

Umbrellas then started to be unfolded around the track which pointed to some drizzle around the circuit. This was why Roberts had been shaking his hand as he passed the pits. The race was red flagged with 9 laps to go. Roberts started celebrating victory but there was some confusion over whether enough laps were completed to declare him the winner?

The Spanish crowd responded to Kenny’s celebrations by throwing cans – a chorus of discontent rippled through the stands. The results were still not declared by the organisers – but there was obviously no doubt in Kenny’s mind that he was the race winner and the race was run. Kenny pulled in to the pits expecting to be sent to the podium arena – only to be disappointed when told that the race would be re-started for them to run the remaining laps of the race. Kenny had not completed enough laps for the race to be declared finished!

It looked as though Kenny’s confusion had been caused by his pit board man holding his finger up to indicate a 1 – which I took as an indication that Roberts had to complete one more lap for the race to be declared run if stopped. Kenny obviously took this to mean that he was number 1 and it was okay to stop the race.

The weather and tyre choice may decide the winner of this drama filled race. The riders have to try and judge the weather which at this point in time was only very lightly drizzling. Slick, cut slick, intermediates or full wets ?

They now had a few minutes to get ready for their 30-minute wet session before re-starting the race a further 5-minutes after the finish of the wet session. Kenny had a 5.5 second lead when the race was stopped but a wrong tyre choice combined with changeable weather could easily have that lead eaten up in a couple of laps, let alone the 9 laps that they will have to catch him. The final race result was to be decided on aggregate times between the two parts of the race. The 1st dry part and the yet to be run 2nd part that was declared wet.

Only the 17 riders that were still circulating when the race was stopped got to start the 2nd wet leg of the race.

Roberts led them away again at the re-start, closely followed by Checa, then a little further back Okada and Barros. A few corners in to the action Checa stuck it under Roberts and immediately started opening quite a gap. Carlos had a 1.2 second lead (on the track), from Roberts by the end of lap 1 of this 2nd leg.

At the start of lap 3 Checa was still out in front and had closed Roberts’ aggregate lead down to only 2.5 seconds from the 5.5 seconds that it was before the start of this 2nd, wet, leg of the race.

Barros had gone backwards through the field. Order on the track – Checa, Roberts, Criville. On aggregate Roberts now had only a 1.3 second lead.

Criville passed Roberts on lap 4 of this second leg but would have to pull out a lot of time on Roberts to put himself in front of the American on aggregate time.

As they crossed the line to start the aggregated lap 21 of the 26 the race order was; on the track – Checa, Criville, Rossi ; on aggregate time – Roberts, Checa, Rossi.

Criville caught and passed Checa with 4 laps to go and was closing up to Rossi for 3rd position on aggregate time. Criville was doing some pretty spectacular rear wheel steering at parts but Checa remained with him. Kenny was holding the gap to Checa and still maintained the lead on aggregate time by 1.6 seconds with 3 laps to go.

Checa clearly had 2nd position wrapped up but he would have to pull his finger out in order to get some more time on Roberts if he was to close down that aggregate gap. Roberts was holding station a few seconds behind Checa on track but still held the lead by 1.6 seconds on aggregate time.

Rossi put on a burst of speed to try and get back his 3rd position from Criville on aggregate time.

Checa took 3 tenths out of Roberts’ aggregate lead on the penultimate lap and either Roberts would have to make a mistake or Checa pull something out of the bag to take the win.

Alex Criville was hanging it out everywhere and exiting the corners in lovely controlled slides as he kept Checa at bay to lead the race on track.

Alex Criville crossed the finish line first just ahead of Checa but it was Kenny Roberts that won the race by 8-tenths of a second on aggregate time while Valentino Rossi rounded out the podium ahead of Criville when the combined sums were done. That was also a young Valentino Rossi’s first premier class podium.

“I thought after the end of the first 16-lap race that we had done enough distance for it to be a result, and I was celebrating victory. I was pretty pleased to have got the hole shot and built up a six-second lead – to tell the truth, we didn’t really have a bike set-up after practice. We put some things together, and decided to just leave it and ride it, so it was a good result. I put up my hand to stop the race, even though the director hadn’t shown the red flags yet. It was getting pretty slippery out there – the riders should have the right to decide on safety grounds. We are the guys sitting on 200 horsepower on slippery tyres. For the second race, it seemed pretty wet, and we decided to put intermediate tyres, to soften the suspension, and to fit steel brakes rather than carbon, as you do for wet conditions. But the gearing was still for the dry, so that was a problem. Then just before the start I decided we needed a slick rear because it was drying out ….. but it was too late by then. As a result, the race was pretty hard. I rode my backside off on the last lap – the difficulty was in not opening the throttle, because the power was too much for the tyres.”

Bike warranty extensions for pandemic

Motorcycle manufacturers are starting to offer warranty extensions because of the down time during the pandemic lockdown.

It began in India a month ago with companies such as KTM, Royal Enfield and Benelli offering up to three-month extensions on the warranty period of new motorcycles.

Since Royal Enfield also offered the extension in the UK, we asked the Australian importers about a week ago if it would be offered here, but they have still not responded.

The first to follow up here was Ural Australia with a three-month extension on the standard two-year warranty.

They have now been followed by three-month extensions on warranties on all new MV Agusta motorcycles and BRP products such as the Can-Am Spyder.

It’s a smart goodwill gesture to retain the loyalty of customers who feel they are have lost out on warranty while their bike has been up on its stand in the garage.

Since few customers will ever actually need the warranty extension, it’s also large a token gesture.

In fact, Murphy’s Law dictates that when you need a claim it’s just after the warranty has expired. Thankfully, a good dealer will honour those anyway.

We are surprised more manufacturers and importers have not offered a warranty extension as well as a roadside assist extension.

Just remember this when it comes time to chose your next motorcycle!

When we first suggested the warranty extension a month ago, we also suggested state governments extend rego and insurance companies extend premium periods or offer a discount.

While no Australian states or territories have come to the party, New Zealand has extended vehicle registrations and warrants of fitness (annual roadworthy certificate) by a whopping six months.

Typical of our cousins over the ditch to be ahead of us on compassion and kindness!

Meanwhile, the only insurers to offer riders a benefit are QBE who have made a token gesture with a $50 gift card for private car owners and just $25 for motorcycle owners.

Gift cards will be able to be used for a “wide variety of goods and services including supermarket shopping, petrol, and at a host of other retail outlets”.

The discount represents about 25% of the average private-use motor insurance policy from April to June. However, motorcycle insurance is often more expensive, so it might be a smaller percentage.

Still, it’s better than nothing.

We have heard that some other insurers such as Youi are offering discounts for private cars, but we have not yet been able to confirm any discounts for riders.

Similarly, remember this wen it comes time to renew your insurance!

Ezpeleta “MotoGP still aiming for late July start”

Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta gives an update on 2020

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta overnight conducted an interview about 2020, plans, contingencies and more. 

“Today we announced the cancellation of the three Grands Prix; Germany, Assen and Finland. The reason is because we are contemplating the possibility to start in July but the problem is with the situation and authorities it will be difficult to do with spectators, so any of these Grands Prix without spectators is very difficult to do. It’s for that reason that we’ve decided with the three local promoters to pass onto next year with those three, instead of putting them on a new date.”

Q: It’s the first time that Assen will have not been on the calendar…

“This is the situation. This coronavirus problem is something we’ve never seen and so unfortunately it’s not a possibility. The authorities of the Netherlands have forbidden events until the end of August and so it’s completely impossible. After that in Assen it will be difficult to organise a Grand Prix and more difficult again without spectators.”

Q: F1 have announced their calendar. So what could a possible MotoGP calendar look like?

“Our idea right now is to start at the end of July. Where and when are still to be decided. We’re sure our initial program is to start in Europe and race from the end of July until November and see what’s happening, and if the non-European races will be possible after November. In the worst case, if it’s not possible to travel outside of Europe, we’ll at least keep a Championship of least 10 to 12 races between the end of July and the end of November.”

Q: Bridgepoint have bought 10,000 coronavirus tests. What can you tell us about this?

“We are working just on the 10,00 coronavirus tests which we agreed with Bridgepoint. Then what we are doing is to try to make a protocol, which is the way we’re working within Dorna now to see how the races could be without spectators and with a limited number of people working in the paddock, which will give different situations regarding transportation, accommodation, hospitality. Then everyone will be tested before leaving their house, then tested when they arrive at the circuit and also when they return home. This is the idea. We are working with another company which belongs to Bridgepoint to acquire these 10,000 tests.”

Q: What’s the possibility of having multiple races at the same circuit?

“We are considering that. To do maybe – not during the same race weekend – doing two consecutive race weekends at the same circuit.”

Q: How are conversations with the riders, teams and manufacturers?

“We have regular contact. Two weeks ago we had a meeting with all the manufacturers together and we decided the technical situation for 2020 and 2021 for the three categories. Then I’m speaking regularly with everyone about our plans for the near future. We are doing that. Some of the riders call me and I’m happy to discuss the situation with them. I must say that everybody is healthy and looking forward to starting as soon as possible. They understand that the situation is different and everybody’s happy to try to start as soon as we can, but in a safe manner.

“The first program we are thinking of the possibility to move by car if necessary but I think that by July, with many safety measures, it will be possible to fly within Europe.”

Q: What message do you have for the fans?

“Our main thing is to maintain our fantastic numbers regarding the interest in MotoGP around the world. Unfortunately this year it seems it will not change during the season. It will be difficult to have spectators at the races but we will have our fantastic television coverage which will permit the majority of people to watch the races.

“After many months without motorcycle races, the expectation for that will bring many people to watch them.

“My message is that we’ll be sure to come back and we’ll be back stronger from this situation. We’re not working just on 2020 but on 2021 and beyond and we’re trying to maintain the races, which is the most important thing.”

Q: How many staff will be present in the paddock? How will we implement the reduction in personnel?

“We talked to the teams and arrived at a consensus that maximum number for a MotoGP manufacturer team will be 40, for satellite or independent teams will be 25, 20 for Moto2 and 15 for Moto3. Then there will be, of course, all the people who produce the television signal; all this crew, then the minimum number of people from Dorna who are in charge of race organisation. This will give us an average of around 1600 people. This is the possibility to control the MotoGP family. Unfortunately at the moment there will be no media and no TV. Maybe, but not sure, maybe some photographers to supply images to everybody.”

Q: What’s the situation with WorldSBK?

“With Superbike we are in the same situation. We are working. The idea is that because many of the circuits we will plan to be at for MotoGP also do Superbike races, then we will be maybe able to have a Superbike race the weekend immediately after a MotoGP race. This is something we are studying together with the Superbike people to work out the best calendar but it’s also a priority for us to have Superbike races.”

The March 2020 issue was a nice read, with the UJM comparison (“Return of the UJMs”)! Really nice to see the standards get some love. Despite my letter months ago decrying the small fuel capacity of the Katana, it sure delivers on performance. And after sitting on the bikes at the local dealer, I totally agree the Kawasaki Z900RS has the most relaxed riding position.

However, I think you could have easily included the XSR900 in the comparison. Yamaha had the XS750 and XS850 triples back in the day. I think you were too hard on yourselves trying to stay with the in-line fours, as a triple does not color too far outside the lines based on historical precedent. The XSR may well have handed the other bikes in the test a whooping in some areas of do-it-all performance. It certainly is no less mainstream in appearance or overall intended execution than something like the Katana. I know my opinion is just that, and a couple of cents along with it will get you a cup of coffee. With that said, I hope the hearkening back to the days of motorcycling when the bikes were more capable overall and not niche focused continues. And softening the lines while rounding the corners to create that classic UJM look is hopefully part of it too.  

In the meantime, I’ll continue to cherish my almost 20-year-old ZRX1200 that was a throwback to the UJM days two decades ago. Man, I would love a Z900RS in the garage though….

In the March 2020 One-Track Mind article by Mark Tuttle (“Misconceptions”), “permissive use” was discussed. I honestly never thought about that clause before, and I’m one of those guys that swaps bikes with others. I also know that insurance stuff varies by policy and by state, so I felt I should call my insurance company and see if permissive use was covered. They assured me that my policy covers permissive use. Thanks, Mark, for causing me to pause and check into this. I encourage everyone to know what your policy covers, what its limits are and who is covered.

I am a motorcycle rider of 55 years. I am also an insurance agent protecting more than 3,000 families. I take my job seriously. When someone asks me a question about insurance coverage I send them a copy of the insurance contract to show them what’s covered. But you are right, so many people don’t know what they have and what they don’t have.  Know your coverage before you need it!

Mark Tuttle, you made me sit straight up in my seat—but not my motorcycle seat! Your “Misconceptions” column caused me to immediately send off a certified letter to my insurance agent asking for that company to mail me a written confirmation that what had been originally, verbally stated to me was, in fact, true: that if my friend, while borrowing my Harley-Davidson Road King, were to be in an accident, the company would treat the accident as if I, the insured, was riding it. “No problem Bob,” the agent replied. So I sat back down in my recliner and read every word of my car policy with its attached motorcycle addendum and I never saw anything even close to “permissive use” other than some vagueness. While I await the official answer, I thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I just finished reading the March issue of Rider from cover to cover as I always do, but this time I was moved to write to EIC Tuttle about his comments on premium fuel. I run premium fuel in everything except my car and truck, but that’s because here in upstate New York, premium fuel is the only one available in non-ethanol. My motorcycles have a 67-year span in their ages and I don’t believe any of them are designed to use ethanol, any more than my other small engines, lawnmowers, chainsaws, snow blowers, etc. I always thought that was my reason for running premium, please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks, and keep up the great work!

Based on a search at pure-gas.org, it appears there are hundreds of stations selling non-ethanol premium fuel in New York, and some other Northeastern states as well. Although your power equipment and older motorcycles may or may not require premium, they will definitely be better off without ethanol, especially if they sit for a while between uses. Consider yourself lucky that New York has so many places where you can buy non-ethanol gasoline, premium or otherwise. In California, for example, non-ethanol pump stations are virtually non-existent outside of airports; it can generally only be purchased in cans and is very expensive. –EIC 

I am glad to see Mark Tuttle help lay the old wives’ tale to rest concerning the use of premium fuel in all motorcycles. As a lifetime gearhead, I agree. The only reason for raising the octane rating above what was recommended by the manufacturer would be an increase in combustion pressure, either by mechanical alteration or by forced induction such as a supercharger or turbocharger. Engine timing also should not be altered except for the same exceptions.

I look forward to each issue of your magazine. With Clement Salvadori’s revealing musings and Eric Trow’s safety insights, I can’t wait to read each issue from cover to cover. I feel a kinship with each writer and an excitement about this hobby, addiction and obsession many of us celebrate. In an age where other motorcycle publications have fallen away, I appreciate the unique vision Rider reveals about the lifestyle we have such a passion for. From the first issue I found on a coffee table a few years ago, I knew there was something special about this magazine. I own three motorcycles that span multiple manufacturers and riding styles, so I refuse to be pigeonholed into a particular subset. I am a motorcycle enthusiast and I take every opportunity to positively share it with the non-riding public. If we are to promote the amazing lifestyle of two wheels (or three, if you are so inclined) we need to work together to learn from our struggles, support each other and celebrate our successes as a community. Riderdoes a great job bringing together all the factions of motorcycling under one roof. Thank you for being a publication for the entire spectrum of motorcycling. Keep up the good work representing all of us.

What a thrill to read about Wendy Crockett’s historic Iron Butt Rally victory (Kickstarts, October 2019)! And then to learn that she rode the same 2005 Yamaha FJR as I do, with the bar risers and Russell Day-Long seat that I’m also crazy about. Last summer I managed a 9,400-mile circumnavigation of the U.S. in 23 days (plus 13 more days camping and visiting family or friends en route). Not the insanity of 13,000 miles in 11 days, but Wendy is an inspiration to us all to keep pursuing challenges (Alaska this summer?) and creating rich memories on two wheels. Thanks, Wendy!

I’m 68 and don’t plan to stop riding anytime in the foreseeable future. What I tell myself is that as long as I have good balance I will stay on two wheels. If there is a way to ride my bike to the funeral home when the time arrives, I’ll find it. Having said that, I do pay far more attention to safety gear than I did when this long journey began. I recently purchased an expensive airbag jacket. I looked at all the options and decided this Helite jacket was the best “bang for the buck” option. I also wear full knee and shin protectors under my riding pants (I removed the pads that came with the pants). Perhaps you folks would do a comparison of the vests, jackets and leather suits with airbag technology out there. These are tough products to find in dealerships so your insights would be welcome.

Here in northern New England, I look out to my driveway and observe that an early fifth season is upon us: “Mud Season.” It is the season between the epic beauty of winter and that season known to many cold climate riders as “spring forth the motorbike from thee storages.” Of course, some riders in warmer climes ride year round. Very few here do. The approach of Mud Season is also the approach of Mindset Season for me. After reminiscing all winter about the best motorcycling moments of the past (a few Ozarks sweepers, Manitoulin Island cruising, Vermont “lost road” exploring…), I make it a point to think about the unpleasant surprises that exist too. I try to ask friends to share their stories, and share a few of mine as well, like one weekend ride years ago where paying attention to my surroundings and allowing myself plenty of space and reaction time saved me from potential disaster. These thoughts are the ones we tend not to consider all winter, but I choose to remember them every time Mud Season—and Mindset Season—blossoms with the daffodils.

Start of Pro Motocross postponed further until July

Outdoor season commencement still a couple of months away.

MX Sports Pro Racing has confirmed that the beginning of the 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship has been bumped back to 4 July.

The scheduled is currently under revision, however, it is official that the series will now conclude on 3 October.

It was previously announced that the championship would conclude mid-September, but that plan has now been scrapped due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and as Monster Energy Supercross attempts to resume later this month.

According to a statement released by the Race Leadership Team, the revised dates and locations of the 11 rounds – still all expected to take place – are to be announced as soon as possible.

Dorna officially cancel Assen, Sachsenring and Finland MotoGP rounds

The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports has announced the cancellation of the HJC Helmets Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, the Motul TT Assen and the Grand Prix of Finland. The ongoing coronavirus outbreak has caused the cancellation of all three events.

The HJC Helmets Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland was set to take place at the Sachsenring from the 19th to the 21st of June, the Motul TT Assen at the TT Circuit Assen from the 26th to the 28th of June, and the Grand Prix of Finland was set to see the new KymiRing make its debut on the MotoGP calendar from the 10th to the 12th of July.

The cancellation of these events also obliges the cancellation of the corresponding FIM Enel MotoE World Cup, Northern Talent Cup and FIM Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup track activity at the same events.

KTM Adventure recall on overheating brake

KTM Australia is recalling 683 of its new 790 Adventure and Adventure R models over a rear brake overheating issue.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the 2019-2020 models experience a material failure of the rear brake line as a result of overheating.

“If the rear brake system fails due to continuous heavy braking there is reduced braking ability or effectiveness,” it says.

“This can increase a risk of an accident to the rider, pillion passenger or other road users.”

To fix the issue, the brake line that leads from the rear brake caliper to the ABS modulator has to be replaced.

During repair, it will also be necessary to replace the round head Torx screw on the rear brake lever with a new screw.KTM 790 Adventure

Consumers will be contacted by direct mail notifying them of the recall. Consumers should contact an authorised KTM dealer.

The vehicle identification numbers of affected bikes is listed at the end of this article.

Dealers will arrange an appointment to inspection your bike and order replacement parts.

KTM only had one recall last year.

Most recalls are issued voluntarily and posted online by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.
